The information required for legal purposes is minimal, and usually consists of: Name of deceased; place and date of birth; place and date of death; sex; unique personal identifier.

Article 47 sets out that the death record shall state the date, time and place of death; the first name, surname, date and place of birth, occupation, domicile and nationality of the deceased; the first names, surnames, occupations, domiciles and nationalities of the deceased's father and mother; the first name and surname of the other spouse, if the deceased was married, widowed or divorced; the first name, surname, age, occupation and domicile of the person registering the death and, where applicable, their relationship to the deceased. A caveat is provided, reading "all of the above, as far as can be ascertained."
